Custom copper roofing for the Master Bedroom’s dormer and bay window

In 2021, we were commissioned to elevate a newly remodeled residence with custom copper roofing for the Master Bedroom’s dormer and bay window. This project was a study in balancing aesthetic elegance with rigorous technical engineering.

Engineering for Longevity

Integrating copper into an existing pre-finished steel standing seam roof requires meticulous planning to prevent galvanic corrosion. To bridge these dissimilar metals, we engineered a custom Stainless Steel valley lined with galvanic-resistant tape at all contact points.

The valley was designed with a prominent center rise to prevent water "crossover" from the copper onto the steel. This required precision miter detailing to ensure the absolute integrity of every soldered joint.

Traditional Craftsmanship & Global Influence

The gable roof features brake-formed panels with interlocking seams, secured with hidden clips and mechanically seamed for maximum durability. In a nod to the homeowner’s German-Swiss heritage, we executed the Bay Window roof in the Old European style:

  • Hand-Formed: Standing seams were meticulously shaped using traditional hammer and dolly tools.
  • Unified Design: The panels converge at the hips in a seamless standing seam, with commons transitioning elegantly up the wall.
  • Precision Detailing: All pan ends are pocket-formed for a clean, watertight finish.

A Sensory Finish

The transformation extends to the gable wall and soffits, which are fully clad in matching copper panels. To complete the experience, the copper gutter system feeds into dual copper rain chains. Beyond their striking visual appeal, they transform rainfall into a "waterfall song," bringing a unique harmony of sight and sound to the home.
